Kokkos & HPSF, the reasons of a choice at the CEA

CEA, the French atomic energy commission, leads the development of multiple high-performance simulation codes. It also hosts a leading computing facility in Europe where one of the two European Exascale supercomputers is planned. To leverage this computing power, codes need to be ported to GPU. In 2023, the CEA launched the CExA project to select and support a sustainable, performance-portable programming models. CExA has chosen Kokkos and is now strongly involved in its development and in the high performance software foundation. In this talk, we will present the reasons for this choice and the status of the Kokkos ecosystem.
