Future of Berkeley Lab Computing US High-Performance computing has entered the Exascale Era and the Exascale Computing Project is winding down. In this talk, I will discuss what might be the next challenges and opportunities that will face DOE National Laboratories. There appear to be four major areas: sustaining the exascale ecosystem and improving classical digital computing beyond exascale; new computing paradigms, such as quantum computing; more tightly coupling computing resources and experimental data; and an ecosystem to enable Artificial Intelligence to be used as a tool for scientific discovery. I will briefly discuss the challenges and opportunities in each.
